A New Orleans hotel for every style
I’ve been loving this quieter time in New Orleans to play tourist in my own town and stay at some of the newer hotel properties in the city. Hotels in New Orleans have their own distinct style, we have the classics that are in the historic French Quarter, the chic hotels in the CBD, and the quaint guest houses Uptown. If you would describe your hotel style as sophisticated, design driven, or fun then I have the hotel for you.
MAISON DE LA LUZ
For the sophisticated hotel lover try a stay at Maison de la Luz. Maison de la Luz is a guest house centrally located in the CBD. It’s where you stay when you want a retreat in the heart of the city. Unlike most hotels that encourage non-guests to hang out in their common areas the Maison de la Luz’s restaurant, honor bar, and common spaces are strictly for hotel guests. This gives the hotel an exclusive feel and then there’s the secret door to Bar Marilou which is the epitome of privacy. Beds sit back from the hallway so you don’t have to worry about noise from other guests and you have signing privileges at the sister property Ace Hotel on the next block so if you want to get rowdy before you retreat you can do that too.
HOTEL PETER AND PAUL
For the design driven hotel lover try a stay at Hotel Peter and Paul. Hotel Peter and Paul is a former Catholic Church compound that fits so snugly in a Marigny neighborhood that you wouldn’t even know it’s a hotel from the exterior. There’s no illuminated sign, just a former school building, rectory, and Covent that have been converted into guest rooms, a cocktail bar and restaurant, an event space, and an ice cream parlor. The hotel has won dozens of awards for the transformation that it underwent from vacant lots that took up the entire block to a hotel that’s filled with rich textures (the green gingham is a fun element), canopy beds, and quite a bit of history. The stage lounge is a retreat on the third floor that lets you socialize, work, or channel your inner Beyoncé and perform before heading over to Elysian Bar which is run by the team of Bacchanal Wine.
THE OLD NO. 77
For the fun and artistic hotel lover try a stay at The Old No. 77 Hotel. If you love art, travel to see art, or are an artist then The Old No. 77 is your hotel. Since its opening the hotel has partnered with the team behind Where Y’Art to feature a rotation of art from local New Orleans artists. Art is everywhere from when you walk in and see the Art-O-Matic vintage cigarette machine turned art vending machine to the installations behind the check in desk to the gift shop which has locally made goods for sale. And because artists sometimes keep strange hours (and it is The Big Easy!) there are several room options with no windows or light well windows that offer limited light. After you rest, head downstairs to the James Beard award winning Compere Lapin from Chef Nina Compton. The Top Chef runner up loved filming her season in New Orleans so much that when it was time for her to pick a city for her first restaurant she came back to New Orleans and has been feeding us her Creole Caribbean inspired food ever since.
