WHERE TO STAY, EAT, & PLAY IN THE OUT ISLANDS, BAHAMAS
If you’ve been following my summer travels then you know I’m just back from a 10 year wedding anniversary trip to the Abacos! My wedding had the feeling of adult summer camp in the best way possible. I guess that’s what happens when you take two families and make them take 2 flights, a cab, a ferry, and a golf cart to a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic! My husband and I tried to re-create that feeling this summer when we invited our guests to join us for another getaway to Green Turtle Cay. Interested in visiting the unspoiled parts of the Bahamas? Read on for everything you need to know about the Out Islands.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
700 islands make up the @myoutislands, but not all of them are inhabited
There are no cruise ships, no high-rise hotels, no crowds
Each one of The Bahamas' Out Islands ranks among the best of all the Caribbean destinations
Bahamians also call the Out Islands the “Family Islands”
WHERE TO STAY
Each island has resorts and hotels that don't stand any taller than the surrounding palm trees, so a sense of place is not something that's lacking. One of my favorite Out Islands properties is The Cove Eleuthera and @montage cay is opening in 2025. Book your stay here and we’ll add on a complimentary VIP service!
Think of The Cove as the perfect spot for when you need an island escape where the service and views are unmatched. The Cove is considered one of the best-kept secrets in The Bahamas for good reason. The two private white sand beaches, and oceanfront suites and villas, are reason enough to go, but the spa, sunsets at the open air bar, and perfectly prepared beachfront meals are why you'll return over and over again.
WHERE TO EAT
If you've never had a Bahamian Spiny Lobster, then August through March is the time to visit. There are lots of good spots in the Out Islands that serve fresh seafood, local specialties, and of course some of the best Bahama Mamas in the islands! A few of my faves are:
BEST THINGS TO DO:
Island hop! Each island offers a unique experience, so charter a catamaran and see more than just one island during your getaway!
The Out Islands are a bird-watcher’s paradise waiting for kayakers to explore.
Discover nature-rich hiking trails and paddle through the lush mangrove forests.
